Agordino

AGORDINO

The area included in this itinerary is called Agordino, also knows as “Heart of the Dolomites” due to its central position in the context of the Dolomites UNESCO World Natural Heritage classification. As a matter of fact, 4 of the 9 official systems recognized and protected by the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation are located entirely or partially in the Cordevole Valley.

This area is not only rich in natural wonders, but also plenty of historical sites and museums, where important archaeological finds are preserved: for example the skeleton and the funeral equipment of the Mondeval Man, discovered in 1987 in the municipality of San Vito di Cadore and today preserved in Selva di Cadore.

Augusto Murer Museum – Falcade (BL)

This museum is actually an interesting exhibition dedicated to the renowned artist and sculptor Augusto Murer (Falcade, 1922 – Padua, 1985), whose reputation has crossed so much the Dolomites that his works have also been exhibited in several renowned artistic value museums, such as the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The museum, made after the artist’s death in 1985, takes the place of the study designed by Giuseppe Davanzo in 1972.

Andraz Castle – Livinallongo del Col di Lana (BL)

Andraz Castle rises up on a glacial erratic transported downstream during the last glacial, in a dominant position over the valley. During the Middle Ages, it was a strategic military bulwark, but later it began to lose its importance until in 1808 it was sold to a private citizen who used it to source building materials. In 2012 the Castle was converted into a museum, to spread the knowledge of the manor house and the surrounding territory.

Vittorino Cazzetta Museum– Selva di Cadore (Bl)

This Museum, opened in 1982, is dedicated to Vittorino Cazzetta, whose important discoveries in the fields of geology and archeology hugely contributed to the growth of the museum. In addition to his collection of fossils, the main findings consist of a mesolithic burial plant complete with a funeral set found in Mondeval de Sora and a huge map of the surface of a boulder with dinosaur prints, fallen from Mt. Pelmetto.
